BUTTER CHICKEN MIGRAINE

  • Aug. 27th, 2008 at 4:06 AM

NOTE: You are about to read a post where I rant about a different culture. Please note that I am not hating on them. I am hating on the experience that I had.

At around 3 pm yesterday, I received a call from my friend Natalie asking me to go with her to the 16th birthday party of her manager's daughter. Since I have never been to an East Indian party before, I decide to tag along and enjoy the free food.

The party was not a rousing success from where I was sitting from. I didn't think that the party included people from other cultures. For about an hour and a half, the people on stage were just talking in their own language and nobody from my table knew what was going on. I even asked my friend if they were reading the Koran because that was what it sounded like to me. There was also the longest cake cutting ceremony that I had ever witnessed in my life. Instead of the usual make a wish-blow the candle-cut the cake routine, they had to call everybody who is remotely related to the celebrant to come up on stage and feed her a piece of the birthday cake. I had to ask my friend if they were going to feed the celebrant the entire cake.

After the longest cake cutting ceremony came the dancing. Of course there was the traditional father and daughter dance. Shortly after was an explosion of East Indian music that was blasting so loud that people could not hear each other anymore. I think I was a little deaf when I left the party.

It was during the dancing part that I started to get my migraine. I couldn't stant the music! I am not saying that I don't appreciate their culture, nor am I saying that I don't want to experience it. All that I am saying is that I don't think I was ready to listen to blasting East Indian music for 3 hours.

I think the party planners/organizers should have taken into consideration the fact that they had guest that aren't East Indian. They should have at least incorporated some English music in the dance mix, that way we could have at least had the chance to bust a move. They could have at least translated what was going on or at least inform of the other guests of what was going on.

Nonetheless, I can see that a lot of time, effort, and money came into this party! Oh, the food was GREAT!

Now that I am done ranting, I just want to say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRIYA!
